In the pickling tanks, the chemical pickling takes place. The scale layer on the strip is chemically dissolved by the acid as follows.

The pickling tanks are of shallow design, which yields a number of advantages compared with conventional (deep tank) designs as followings :

- The strip can be pushed on the bottom of the pickling tanks.
- High turbulence.
- No need for strip lifters.
- No Catenary controls necessary.
- Small acid amount and therefore short start-up time.
